Setting up 1Case
1Case gives your Commerce7 checkout your own shipping prices: zones you draw, prices by weight, bottle count or flat rate, a separate chart for club members, and ship dates for heat holds and pre-releases.
How it works
When a customer reaches the shipping step, Commerce7 sends 1Case the cart. 1Case finds the zone for the ship-to state, picks the shipping methods for that zone, prices each one with your settings, and sends the list back. Commerce7 shows those methods at checkout and charges the one the customer picks.
Commerce7 also asks for a price on orders nobody is at checkout for, such as Corporate orders and Bulk pickup-to-ship. Those are charged the method you mark as Default.
Commerce7 is always the safety net. If 1Case can't price an order (a state you haven't put in a zone, Custom rules switched off, or no answer within Commerce7's 3-second limit), Commerce7 charges the manual rates under Settings → Shipping instead. A customer is never left without shipping.
1Case prices US ship-to addresses. Orders to any other country get Commerce7's own rates.
Install and open
- Install 1Case from the Commerce7 App Store. No developer is needed.
- Open the app from your Commerce7 admin. It uses your Commerce7 sign-in, so there's nothing separate to log into.
- Follow the four steps in the left menu: Where you ship, What you charge, Test an order and Go live. Home tells you the next thing to do at every stage.
A new install starts with Custom rules off and example prices loaded, so nothing changes at your checkout until you switch it on.
Point Commerce7 at 1Case
Commerce7 only asks 1Case for prices once it's selected as the source of your shipping rates. In your Commerce7 admin, open Settings → Shipping and choose 1Case under Rates From.
Keep your own zones and manual rates in Settings → Shipping. They're the backup Commerce7 falls back to, and 1Case can copy your prices into them for you (see Backup rates).
Step 1: Where you ship
A zone is a named group of states that ship at the same prices. There are two sets, switchable at the top of the page:
- Standard orders: every normal order is zoned here.
- Club orders: club orders are zoned here instead, because club shipping groups rarely match distance zones.
Type a two-letter state code into a zone and press Enter. A state can be in one zone at a time, so adding it somewhere new moves it. Puerto Rico and other territories count as US states. States in no zone are listed under the zones: orders to them get Commerce7's own rates, which is the safe choice for states you don't ship wine to.
Renaming a zone keeps its prices. Deleting a zone leaves its states without a zone. Press Save zones when you're done; nothing on this page saves by itself.
Step 2: What you charge
Pick Standard orders or Club orders, then a zone. Each card is one shipping method a customer can choose. Click a card to edit it.
| Setting | What it means |
|---|---|
| Title | What the customer sees at checkout, for example "Ground" or "2-Day". |
| Code, carrier, service | How the method is labelled to Commerce7. Codes are unique within a zone. Carrier is one of Commerce7's US carriers or Other. |
| Default | Exactly one per zone. It's what Commerce7 charges when nobody is at checkout, for example Corporate orders and Bulk pickup-to-ship. |
| Seasonal | Only offered while Summer season is on, for example a temperature-controlled method. |
| Bottle sizes | Any size, or only when every wine bottle in the order is one of the sizes you tick (187ml up to 6L, or any size in ml). |
Four ways to price a method
| Pricing | How it works |
|---|---|
| Flat price | One price, whatever the order size. |
| Flat + per extra bottle | A price that covers the first few bottles, plus a charge for each bottle after that. |
| By package weight | Bands like "up to 12 lbs: $20", plus what happens above the last band. Weight comes from each product's weight in Commerce7. |
| By exact bottle count | A price for each listed count (1, 2, 4, 6, 12...), common for club shipments, plus an optional single-Magnum price. Counts you don't list aren't priced by this method. |
Prices are typed in dollars (18.50). Press Save methods under the cards.
Mistakes it stops
- The Default can't be Seasonal or limited to some bottle sizes, since those aren't always offered.
- Two methods in a zone can't share a code.
- Prices over $250 ask you to confirm, and anything over $1,000 is refused as a likely typo.
- If a colleague saved the same zone after you opened it, your save stops and shows you their version, so nobody overwrites anybody.
Home reads all your settings together and lists anything that doesn't fit, such as states in a zone with no prices, prices for a zone no state uses, or zones still on the example prices.
Large bottles and gift sets
Below the Standard methods is a grid of special prices for carts that hold only Magnums, a 3L, a 6L, or gift sets. When a cart matches a row, those prices replace the normal ones. A blank cell means that method isn't offered for that cart. Leave a whole row blank to use the normal prices. Mixed carts always use the normal prices.
Step 3: Test an order
Pick an order type and a ship-to state, add up to six lines (wine of any size, gift sets, accessories, gift cards) and press Check the price. You see what 1Case would charge, which method is the default, and how it got there: which zone the order landed in and why any method was hidden. It works while Custom rules are off, so you can check everything before customers see it.
Step 4: Go live
- Custom rules is the master switch. On: checkout uses your 1Case prices. Off: Commerce7 quotes its own rates, exactly as if 1Case weren't installed. It saves the moment you flip it. If the example prices are still loaded, it asks you to confirm first.
- Summer season turns every Seasonal method on or off at once. It's your call, not a calendar.
Emergency stop: if a price ever looks wrong on a live order, switch Custom rules off. Commerce7 takes over straight away. Then look into it.
Backup rates in Commerce7
If 1Case ever can't answer in time, Commerce7 charges the manual rates under Settings → Shipping. On the Go live page you can copy your Standard prices there, so a hiccup still charges about the right amount.
- Preview the copy shows each backup price next to the 1Case price for 1, 6 and 12 bottles.
- Copy to Commerce7 replaces your US zones in Settings → Shipping. Zones that only ship outside the US are left alone. Your original rates are saved first.
- Keep in step copies again after every price change.
- Put back my original Commerce7 rates restores what you had before the first copy.
Commerce7 prices by weight, so per-bottle prices are copied using the bottle weight you enter. 1Case only changes your Commerce7 shipping settings when you press one of these buttons or switch on Keep in step.
Club orders
Club orders are zoned with your Club zones and priced from your Club prices, so members can have their own shipping rates. Under Product types & clubs, choose what happens when the Club prices can't cover a club order (the state isn't in a Club zone, or the bottle count isn't listed): Commerce7's own rates, or your Standard prices. If you don't have special club shipping, pick the Standard prices.
Product types
For each Commerce7 product type, choose how it ships:
- Counts as bottles: counts toward bottle counts, weight and bottle-size rules.
- Add-on: adds its weight but isn't a bottle. A corkscrew never turns a 6-bottle shipment into 7.
- Ships free: ignored for shipping, like a gift in the box.
Add your own types if you use them (for example Food). "Any other type" covers everything not listed.
Ship dates
A hold delays shipping until its Ships on date. Leave its states and products blank to hold every order, or narrow it:
- Ship-to states: a weather hold, for example AZ, TX and NV in summer.
- SKUs or Collections: a pre-release or futures. An order with any of them waits, including the other items in it.
- Club orders too: off by default, so club runs ship as you schedule them.
- Methods that still ship right away: for example a paid 2-Day, for customers who need their wine now.
- Checkout wording: added after the method name.
{date}becomes the ship date, so checkout shows "Ground (ships Nov 3)".
When a customer picks a held method, 1Case saves the date as the order's Requested Ship Date in Commerce7. Commerce7 doesn't stop an order from shipping early, so your team or fulfillment partner ships it on that date. Prices and method codes don't change.
Leave Ships on blank for a hold that runs until you switch it off. Those orders have no date to save, so they're listed under Orders on hold until you mark them done. That list also flags any order that should have a date but doesn't.
Ship dates need two webhooks connected in the Commerce7 Dev Center (Cart update and Order create). They're part of the app install, so there's nothing for you to set up.
Import from Commerce7
Just look at it shows what's in Settings → Shipping today. Import it copies it into 1Case as your Standard zones and prices. Commerce7 has no club concept, so your Club zones and prices are kept unless a Commerce7 zone has "club" in its name. Services with no rates are skipped rather than imported at $0. If the weights look 1,000 times too heavy, it asks before saving.
The first import keeps a copy of your original settings, and Revert to original puts it back. Load example rates fills in placeholder prices and switches Custom rules off. None of these change anything in Commerce7.
Orders charged your backup rates
Under Troubleshooting, 1Case lists any order that ended up on Commerce7's backup rates while Custom rules were on, with the method and price it paid, so you can check it. Orders 1Case handed back on purpose (a state with no zone, a club setting) aren't listed. Mark them as reviewed when you're done.
Troubleshooting
- Checkout still shows the old rates. Check that Custom rules are on, that 1Case is selected under Rates From in Settings → Shipping, and that the ship-to state is in a zone.
- A method is missing. Run the same order under Test an order. "How we got there" says why each method was hidden, for example a bottle-size limit or Summer season being off.
- Weight prices look wrong. Weight comes from each product in Commerce7. If any item in the cart has no weight, Commerce7 quotes that order itself.
- Record incoming carts keeps the last few checkout requests so we can look into a problem with you. Leave it off day to day.
What 1Case doesn't do
- It doesn't check alcohol shipping compliance. Which states you may ship to, age checks and taxes stay with your compliance tools. Leaving a state out of every zone hands it to Commerce7's own rules.
- It doesn't buy labels or talk to carriers. It sets the price the customer pays for shipping.
- It doesn't price addresses outside the US.
Uninstalling
Uninstalling stops Commerce7 asking 1Case for prices, so checkout goes back to your manual rates. Switch Rates From back in Settings → Shipping as well. If you copied your prices into Commerce7, press Put back first if you want your original rates restored. Your 1Case settings are kept so a reinstall picks up where you left off; email us to have them deleted. See the Privacy Policy for details.
